• How much will my startup cost?

  • Do I have a space big enough for a few hives, and will the HOA approve of it?

  • Do I have Time for maintaining and working in my apiary?

  • Do I need to join a bee club?

  • Do I need a Mentor?

What does it take to be a Beekeeper? These are all questions to ask yourself before you start buying equipment and then your bees. The start-up cost for buying a complete hive will vary. From the bottom board, hive boxes, deep or medium heights, and 8 frame or 10 frames, and then you have to buy frames and foundation. Research American companies who build wooden ware and all will send out catalogs to shop from.

If you only want to have 2 or 3 hives and you have the space to place them in and you are not in a HOA, then it is probably a good place to put your hives in that location.

Spending time in your apiary will vary depending on the task and the time of year. We have attorneys, doctors and business owners who have become successful beekeepers and are able to balance work and hobbies. take time to inspect and observe the bees’ movements. Beekeeping is not a sprint; it is a marathon!

Why Join a Bee Club? As a new beekeeper you will need to rely upon those who have been down the long road to success. Mentors are fellow beekeepers who are willing to be of help and instruct you to become a reliable beekeeper.

Finally, if you can answer yes to these questions and you are committed to becoming a beekeeper then I would recommend the hobby! As a beekeeper, it is rewarding and can be a ZEN moment for you!
